Democracy is not something that can be taken for granted. It has been fought for and shaped over centuries and, especially today, must be actively defended. The uprisings known as the Salzburg Peasants’ War took place in 1525 and 1526, when Salzburg’s miners and peasants attempted to challenge the religious and secular dominance of Cardinal Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg.
In her artistic practice, Barbara Holub frequently engages with socio-political issues and processes of urban transformation. She describes her approach as “Silent Activism”. To this end, she creates performative situations, often in public spaces. Many of her works are subtle, persistent, and sustainable in their impact. WHEN, IF NOT NOW asks about the urgency of taking action today and invites reflection on the causes and values for which we choose to engage.
Flags have traditionally served as symbols of orientation, belonging, and the communication of demands during uprisings and public marches. They are also often associated with masculine forms of representation. In cooperation with the Museum Vogtturm, Holub organized three workshops in which participants collectively created the “Plaisir-Plissée Flag”. This object embraces a distinctly feminine momentum and, through its colour scheme, also reflects diversity and inclusivity. The theme of JOY is brought to the forefront as a foundation for collective engagement. As a positive form of resistance, JOY counters the sense of powerlessness many of us experience in relation to current political developments and the patriarchal dynamics that continue to shape armed conflicts around the world.
As part of a performative procession inspired by Barbara Holub’s concept of “Silent Activism”, the flag is carried to the Vogtturm and ceremonially raised, accompanied by the gentle sound of folding fans opening and closing. Visitors and local residents are invited to replace the fabric ribbons attached to the flag with new ones. In doing so, they can contribute both pre-formulated and personal statements about what brings joy. The project is not centred on protesting against something; rather, it invites all of us to make a positive statement in support of community and togetherness. (Tina Teufel)
